This story is based on an event that took place in China about 1,500 years ago during the Northern and Southern Dynasties 386-589. It is about how a strategy saved an army. The battlefield is an unpredictable arena where any party can win or lose. But no matter what, an army must protect itself from the enemy. In the case of General Tan Daoji and his army, they faced a life-or-death crisis in more ways than one.
The enemy had been chasing them for days, and their granary had been set on fire. General Tan’s soldiers were very close to starving. To make matters worse, traitors had told the enemy about their food shortage. If General Tan and his army continued to retreat without restoring their food supply, the soldiers would fall into the enemy’s hands.
At this crucial moment, the calm general made a bold decision. He surprised the enemy! Because of the actions of General Tan, the confused enemy hesitated and retreated. The young general was able to take his soldiers home safely.
