Getting to Know: Fiction and Non-fiction
Strategy Guidance: Fiction and Non-fiction
What Is Fictionand Non-fiction:
Fiction is the form of any work that deals, in part or in whole, with information or events that are not real, but rather, imaginary and theoreticalthat is, invented by the author.
Fiction generally refers to novels and short stories, and it may also refer to the theatre, including opera and ballet, film, television, poetry and song.
Non-fiction contrasts with fiction. It deals exclusively with factual or at least assumed factual events, descriptions, observations, and so on.
Non-fiction includes art, biography, culture, history, journalism, memoir and so on.
Features of Fiction:
Fiction can be realistic which, although untrue, could actually happen. Some events, people, and places may even be real. Some imagined events could possibly happen in the future.
Fiction can also be non-realistic. That is to say, the events in the story could not happen in real life, such as those involving an alternate form of history of mankind other than that recorded, or needing impossible technology.
Elements of Fiction:
Even among writing instructors and best-selling authors, there is little consensus regarding the number and composition of the fundamental elements of fiction.
Generally, there are several elements of fiction: plot, exposition, foreshadowing, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, conflict, character and so on.
