PrefacePower transmission line develops with the advancement of electric network.At the end of the1980s,the major of power transmission line of the full time technological college was establishedby the electric department in GeZhouBa College of Hydroelectric Engineering now China ThreeGorges University,CTGU and Northeast Electric Power College now Northeast Electric PowerUniversity in accordance with the increasing needs of the power enterprises,and the major wasalso set up for the on-the-job training workers in many universities for employees.Till now,although the major of power transmission line has not registered in the catalogs of the Ministry ofEducation,it has developed a comprehensive system including postgraduate,undergraduate andtechnological academy education of this trade due to thriving demand for this major and theconsistent efforts of the fellow teachers in this area,and it has formed a relatively perfect structureof this major,and cultivated a lot of advanced engineering technology workers for the powernetwork construction in China.However,it is a pity that there is still no English course book forstudents majoring in power transmission line.Therefore,many students in this major have to usenon-professional English course books in their professional English studies.In these course books,there is little introduction to power transmission line,which can not meet the professional need oftheir English studies for the advanced engineering technology workers in the field of powertransmission line.Therefore,based on years of teaching and researching in this major, the editors ventured toedit this book in want of providing a book for students who can consistently learn Englishexpressions, skills and techniques,and learn English vocabularies and scientific techniques in thisfield at home and abroad.And this book has introduced the current development of powertransmission line, enabling the students to learn further about this field and mastering the writingskills of science and technique English as well as the writing requirement of scientific papers inEnglish.This book is edited on the basis of the condensed professional knowledge by the teachers inCTGU.The theoretical bases are mechanics and electricity, and the core techniques are the design,construction and operation maintenance of power transmission line.So the book has two parts.Partone is an intensive introduction to the power transmission line for teachers and students to use inclass.Part two is an extensive introduction to power transmission line and its development for theoptional use of the teachers, students and people in need.The characteristics of this book are as follows:1 Clearly targeted.It is totally edited in English for those in the power transmissionline,which would facilitate the basic English studies with the professional knowledge,enabling thestudents to grasp the newest scientific and technologic development in their profession,and to learnthe skill of using foreign literatures.2 Extensive forms.Except for the ordinary texts, readings and translations in professionalEnglish books, there are professional vocabularles, translation skills,requirement of Englishscientific research papers and relevant exercises at the end of each chapter.So the students cancombine their English techniques with professional knowledge in their studies.3 Separation of teaching arrangement.It contains the intensive and extensive parts,so boththe teachers and students have their own choices.The intensive part is for in-class studies,and theextensive for after-class reading.4 Adding introduction to scientific research papers.In addition to learning professionalEnglish,this book has introduced the writing skills and requirements of scientific researchpapers,allowing them to learn about writing and contribution of scientific papers in a betteracquaintance with the scientific frontier technology in power transmission line.Finally,I would like to conclude with a sentence from the Book of Poetry in ancient China:thelittle bird is tweeting for a bosom friend.This book has primitively made an attempt in firstlyediting a professional English course book in power transmission line.So there is inevitable to havesome incorrect or imperfect expressions in the book owing to the limited knowledge of the editors,hence your valuable advice will be sincerely welcomed,and it will better serve for professionalEnglish teaching and learning in this major in Chinese universities as well as for the scientific andengineering workers in their professional English studies.This book was chiefly edited by Tang Bo and Sheng Chunlai in CTGU.Zhang Yujiao,HuGang,Huang Li,Zhi Li,Gao Liang and Nan Chunlei also contributed to the edition.The Englishtranslation was examined and revised by Sheng Chunlai.I am greatly indebted to Professor Wang Zhangqi,from North China Electric PowerUniversity,who examined and verified the edition.The EditorJuly,2017
