What is culture? What is crossculture? How and where can you find culture, crossculture, their components?
Keeping these questions in mind, I decided to make a research and exploration with my personal experiences. I had been in America for four monthsfrom December 2016 to April 2017 as a visiting scholar. In my view, culture, and crossculture as well, is something visible, touchable, and perceivable. In no moment can we be separated from culture. That holds true in terms of crossculture for any overseas visiting scholar, for they are endowed with dualculture identity. So, personal experience should be the best case and also the effective method for the study and analysis of culture and crossculture.
I tried to keep a research dairy about my daily life, the affairs and events that happened around me and my friends, the natural environments near or far away from the living quarters, the changes of my feelings and emotions affected under the alien culture, all with a focus on the topic of crosscultural education and cultural spread. Not only write them down, I also make a comparison and contrast to find out the similarities and differences; not just conduct the observation with my own eyes and mind, collect the materials with my own hand, I also have a discussion with my colleagues and supervisors home and abroad. Only in this way can we discover the authentic appearance of culture and what is hidden behind the crossculture. Of course, there are still some arguments and controversies in academic field and circles, as crossculture is in nature a cultural hybrid or blending, in contrast to cultural nihilism.
What I have done is nothing but a job of academic meditation rather than a pure description of the crosscultural social phenomenon. I earnestly hope it can offer a different angle towards the academic research of culture and crossculture.
In order to illustrate my point of view clearly and convincingly, I have used some pictures I took during my academic visiting. And I owe my thanks and appreciation to those in the pictures who gave permission to use those pictures.
Thanks to those who offer me the good opportunity to conduct this academic research in America and those who, including my dear family, present their stories and experiences as my research materials.
