An undeniable fact is that modern society cannot maintain its operation without the input of energy. Energy transformation and utilization are familiar to but not fully understood by most people. As such an important major, energy and power engineering involves two critical aspects that significantly influence the development of the world economy, one is energy and the other is power. This book is not drafted for introducing theoretical knowledge of energy and power engineering. Instead, we would like to expand the vision of the readers and to provide some support for analyzing and solving complex problems in relevant applications. Recent advancements in engineering fields of energy utilization are emphasized. Furthermore, useful tools in exploring fundamental mechanisms of energy utilization are introduced. A distinct feature of energy utilization is fluid flow. Therefore, a global view of fluid flows is provided and several distinct flow phenomena arising in fluid machinery are described. The book is intended to be a guide for beginners as well as for students who have had some experience in related field. Intricate mathematical analysis has been avoided. The book develops along seven chapters. Chapter 1 presents an overview of energy. Chapter 2 introduces the practical infrastructures and projects for extracting energy from natural resources. Fundamental principles in energy utilization are briefly introduced in Chapter 3. Utilization of kinetic energy using the hydrokinetic turbine is covered in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 focuses on the impeller pump, an important branch of rotating machinery. Basic concepts and operational principles are explained. Power machines related to thermal effects, boilers and heat exchangers are introduced in Chapter 6. Some expectations in the field of energy and power engineering are presented in Chapter 7. In the appendix, important terminologies are expressed simultaneously in English and Chinese. This book is oriented to furnish a whole view of energy and energy utilization. Therefore, regarding a specific knowledge, it is impractical to extend it to a wide scope. For readers who are interested in any specific subject, referring to related textbooks for further details is suggested. The authors are grateful for the financial support from the Top-notch Academic Programs Project of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions. The authors also would like to express thanks to colleagues and engineers for their help and valuable advices. The authors welcome any suggestions or comments to this textbook, which are expected to be emailed to the authors through cankangujs@163.com.ContentsPreface
