An October Sunrise

I was up the next morning before the October sunrise, and away
through the wild and the woodland. The rising of the sun was noble
in the cold and warmth of it; peeping down the spread of light, he
raised his shoulder heavily over the edge of Gray Mountain and
wavering length of upland. Beneath his gaze the dew-fogs dipped and
crept to the hollow places, then stole away in line and column,
holding skirts and clinging subtly at the sheltering corners where
rock hung over grassland, while the brave lines of the hills came
forth, one beyond other gliding.
The woods arose in folds, like drapery of awakened mountains,
stately with a depth of awe, and memory of the tempests. Autumn’s
mellow hand was upon them, as they owned already, touched with gold
and red and olive, and their joy towards the sun was less to a
bridegroom than a father.
Yet before the f?loating impress of the woods could clear itself,
suddenly the gladsome light leaped over hill and valley, casting
amber, blue, and purple, and a tint of rich red rose, according to
the scene they lit on, and the curtain f?lung around; yet all like
a dispelling fear and the cloven hoof of darkness, all on the wings
of hope advancing, and proclaiming, “God is here!” Then life and
joy sprang reassured from every crouching hollow; every f?lower and
bud and bird had a f?luttering sense of them, and all the f?lashing
of God’s gaze merged into soft benef?icence.
So, perhaps, shall break upon us that eternal morning, when crag
and chasm shall be no more, neither hill and valley, nor great
unvintaged ocean; when glory shall not scare happiness, neither
happiness envy glory; but all things shall arise, and shine in the
light of the Father’s countenance, because itself is risen.
次日清晨，十月的太阳还没有升起，我已起身出门，穿越原野和林地。在十月寒冷与温暖相交的天气里，日出是那样隆重。透过隐约可见的朝晖，太阳从格雷山边和蜿蜒的高地上缓缓升起。在阳光的照射下，晨雾收起了它的湿气，降落到山谷里，然后偷偷变成丝缕，拖着裙摆在草地上的岩石角落里寻找栖身之所，而小山粗壮的线条渐渐明朗，连续不断地滑现在眼前。

然而，森林脱掉那层缥缈之前，怡人的阳光突然跃上山头和峡谷，依照它停落的景致和四周的帷帐，抛洒出琥珀色、蓝色、紫色，还有富贵的玫瑰红。一切都像一个驱赶恐惧和踢碎黑暗的使者，一切都插上希望的翅膀前行，它们呼喊着，“上帝在这里！”于是，生命与喜悦放心地跃出每个蜷缩的山谷。每一枝花朵、每个蓓蕾和每只鸟都为之欢欣，上帝凝视的目光融汇着温柔的慈善。
因此，也许那永恒的黎明会突然出现在我们面前，那时峭壁、沟壑、小山和峡谷都将不复存在，也没有了无边的大海。那时，荣誉不能威吓幸福，幸福也不再嫉妒荣誉。只是，一切都将复苏，在天父的慈善中闪耀，因为它自己也在复苏。
