Frank: So Rose, can you tell me the exact location of the Headquarters of the
United Nations in America since you have lived there so many years?
Rose: You find the right person! To tell you the truth, I know UN Headquarters
so well.
Frank: Aha, I am so excited.
Rose: Listen to me carefully now. The Headquarters of the United Nations is
a distinctive complex in New York City, United States, that has served
as the official Headquarters of the United Nations since its completion
in 1952. It is located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, on
spacious grounds overlooking the East River. Turtle Bay is used as a
synonym for the UN Headquarters or for the UN as a whole. Its borders
are First Avenue to the west, East 42nd Street to the south, East 48th
Street to the north and the East River to the east, covering the area
from East 42nd Street to East 48th Street. Are you clear?
Frank: Yes, very clear.
Rose: In fact, the UN complex includes four major buildings―the Secretariat
building, the domed General Assembly building, the Dag Hammarskjold
Library as well as the Conference building, while the Secretariat building
is most predominantly featured in depictions of the Headquarters.
Frank: We often see the flags of the member states are flying before the
building on TV. Those flags casually stand there?
Rose: Of course not! Flags of the member states, arranged in alphabetical
order just inside the perimeter fence of the complex, plus the UN flag,
are flowing, quite magnificent and grand, in front of the Headquarters.
Frank: Er! I do get a clue! Thanks a lot.
Rose: You are welcome. I''m happy to share my knowledge and experience
with you.
Frank: Call me if you come to America!
Rose: Sure.
Plowshares", a gift from the Soviet Union, Russia. The former is the
symbol of non-violence, telling people we want peace, no war and
calling on international disarmament. The latter symbolizes human
beings want to end the war, change damning weapons into creative
tools to benefit the man.
Nancy: The bronze "Broken Globe" on UN Plaza, a gift from Italy, expresses
human''s anxiety for today''s globe. Other notable sculptures include
Japanese "Peace Bell" made out of coins donated by children from 60
countries, Chinese ivory carving which is unconventionally exquisite,
"Chagall Stained Glass Window" designed and donated by French
artist Mark Chagall, etc..
Mike: Fantastic!
Nancy: And remember that the U.N. garden is also a part that cannot miss in
which various plants, flowers and grass donated by social groups and
individuals.
Mike: Ok! Have a sweet dream.
